Huang Leads Field, Mavericks Tied for Eighth After Round One at Sandestin Collegiate Classic

DESTIN, Fla. — Jen Chie Huang fired a 6-under-par 64 to take the individual lead as the UT Arlington men's golf team opened the Sandestin Collegiate Classic on Monday at Raven Golf Club.

The Mavericks posted an even-par 280 in the opening round and sit tied for eighth in the 14-team field alongside Houston Christian. UTA is just one stroke behind sixth-place Nicholls and Lamar and two strokes behind Texas State and ULM, which are tied for fourth. Louisiana leads the tournament after opening with a 9-under 271.

Huang provided the highlight of the opening round for UTA, carding a 6-under 64 to take sole possession of first place. He enters the second round one stroke ahead of Mercer's Lukas Lautrup, who shot a 5-under 65.

Michael Chevalier, Austin Dennis and Joey Hayden each turned in a 2-over 72 and are tied for 46th place. Dennis and Hayden were making their UTA debuts, with Dennis also competing in his first collegiate tournament.

Ed Procter rounded out the Maverick lineup with an 11-over 81 and sits in 79th place following the opening round.

The three-day event is being played on the 6,901-yard, par-70 Raven Golf Club. The Mavericks return to the course Tuesday for the second round before concluding the tournament Wednesday. The Sandestin Collegiate Classic is UTA's first tournament of the 2026-27 season.
