ARLINGTON, Texas - Senior center Roy Johnson scored 11 of his team-high 19 points in the second half as Texas-Arlington defeated the Tyler Elite 107-84 in the exhibition opener for UTA Monday night at Texas Hall.
Johnson led six Mavericks in double figures. Senior forward Derrick Obasohan (17), Stephen Floyd (13), Chris Hairfield (13), Steven Thomas (12) and Brady Dawkins (11) all scored in double figures.
Tyler Elite was led by former University of Houston standout Kirk Ford with 28.
UTA jumped out to a 55-35 halftime lead by shooting 62.9% (22-of-35) from the field. The Mavericks canned six of 11 three-pointers for the game, including three by Hairfield.
Two Ford free throws with 14:38 to play cut the lead to 64-51, but Tyler never closer as UTA stretched its lead to as many as 28, 107-79, on two Kenneth Henderson free throws with 1:50 to play.
UT-Arlington will play its final exhibition game of the season Nov. 17 when they host the Bossier City All-Stars at 7:30 p.m. UTA opens the season Nov. 22 at TCU.
