MAVS HOLD OFF PESKY ALL-STARS IN EXHIBITION FINALE

ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas-Arlington sophomore guard Steven Thomas scored a team-high 24 points and senior forward Derrick Obasohan added 15 in a 89-77 win over the Bossier City (La.) All-Stars in exhibition play Monday night at Texas Hall.
Bossier City was led by Chad Hendrick with 23 points. Former Sam Houston State standout Eddie Barlow canned 17 and Roderick Brown added 15.
Along with Thomas and Obasohan, UTA had senior center Roy Johnson (13) and sophomore forward Kenneth Henderson (12) score in double figures.
UTA broke open a tight game with a 19-11 run in the first 5:33 of the second half. A basket The Mavs extended the lead to 14, 71-57, after a Henderson bucket with 9:44 to play.
Bossier City trimmed the lead to one, 75-74, after a three-pointer from former Sam Houston State standout Eddie Barlow with 3:41 to play. But Thomas responded with a three-point play to give UTA an 80-74 lead with 2:30 remaining. Obasohan and Johnson scored back-to-back buckets and Johnson added a free throw to stretch the lead back out to 85-74 with 48.5 seconds to play. Thomas added an exclamation with a dunk from Donny Beacham in the final seconds.
Thomas, a Fort Worth native, led UTA with 10 first-half points and the Mavericks led 36-34 at halftime. There were nine lead changes in the opening half. UTA hit 50% (15 of 30) from the field and out-rebounded Bossier City 22-11, but committed 15 turnovers.
UTA opens the season Saturday, Nov. 22 at Texas Christian University. Tip off is at 7:05 p.m. The home opener is Dec. 3 when the Mavericks host Texas Wesleyan.
