MAVERICKS HANDLE LIONS 11-1 IN SEVEN INNINGS

March 21, 2003

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington jumped on Southeastern Louisiana early and never looked back as they cruised to a 11-1 victory over the Lions, in seven innings, in the series opener Friday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The Mavericks (14-12, 3-1) got on the board in the first inning as Aaron Batlle reached on an error by first baseman Joey Duhe. He advanced to second and then third on two balks by starting pitcher Risley St. Germain. Ryan Roberts made them pay as he delivered an RBI single back through the box.

UTA struck again the second inning as Chris Taylor ledoff with a single through the left side. He came around to score on a Robby Deevers triple down the right field line. Deevers scored on a passed ball by catcher Justin Casas. With two outs, Kasey Baker singled to shortstop and stole second base. Batlle delivered a single through the right side to score Baker.

The Mavs scored again in the fourth inning as Deevers reached on a fielding error by the first baseman as he dropped the throw from across the diamond and advanced to second as the ball rolled away. Deevers then stole third base and scored on a Dustin Bozarth sacrifice fly to center field.

In the sixth inning, Darrell Preston blasted a two-our home run to right field. Hunter Pence followed with a triple to right center field and scored on a wild pitch. Taylor walked and Scott Williams was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a passed ball and Taylor scord on a wild pitch. Deevers followed with an RBI triple down the left field line to score Williams. All four runs in the inning scored with two outs.

The sixth inning saw Baker reach on a throwing error by new third baseman Robert Waltman. Batlle ripped a single back up the middle sending Baker to third. Roberts delivered an RBI single to left field scoring Baker. Dan Dody delivered a pinch hit single through the left side to score Batlle.

The Lions (6-11, 0-3) got on the board in the seventh inning as Lenny Mayard delivered an RBI double to right center field.

Aaron Pullin (2-1) picked up the victory by pitching seven innings, allowing one run on seven hits while striking out three. St. Germain (1-2) took the loss by allowing eight runs, seven earned, on eight hits in 4.2 innings of work.

Battle, Roberts, Pence and Deevers each collected two hits for UTA. Roberts and Deevers had two RBI apiece and Baker, Batlle, Taylor and Deevers each scored two runs.

The Mavs and Lions will be back on the diamond tomorrow afternoon as they play game two of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
