SAN ANTONIO, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington capitalized on some timely hitting early and took advantage of two Texas-San Antonio errors to thrash the Roadrunners 17-4 Friday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
The Mavericks (23-15, 11-2 SLC) struck with two outs in the first inning as Ryan Roberts doubled to center field and Hunter Pence and Chris Taylor followed with walks. After falling into an 0-2 hole, Darrell Preston cleared the bases with a double down the left field line.
UTA struck again in the second inning as Scott Williams led off with a double to right center field. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Kasey Baker drove in Williams with a groundout to second base.
UTSA (18-17, 5-8 SLC) got a pair of runs back in the fourth inning as Cory Horton deposited his second home run of the season over the right center field wall for a two-run shot.
The Mavs bats quickly responded in the fifth inning as Aaron Batlle started with a single down the left field line. Roberts followed with a single through the left side and Pence walked. Taylor plated Batlle with a groundout to third and Preston did the same. Robby Deevers doubled to center field, scoring Pence, and came around to score as the shortstop booted a ball off the bat of Williams.
UTA struck again in the sixth inning as Batlle started things with a single to center field and Roberts singled through the left side advancing Batlle to third. Pence singled through the left side scoring Batlle and advanced to second on a fielding error by left fielder Eric Moreno allowing Roberts to score. Taylor advanced Pence to third with another single through the left side. Pence came into score when Taylor got into a rundown between first and second.
Roberts added to the lead in the eighth inning as he belted his conference leading 11th home run of the season over the left center field wall for a two-run blast. Pence followed with an infield single to short and Taylor plated him with a double to right center field. Dan Dody beat out an infield single on the right side and Deevers delivered his sixth home run of the season over the left center field wall for a three-run shot.
Aaron Pullin (5-1) picked up the victory allowing four runs on six hits in 7.1 innings of work. Mike Srp (4-5) suffered the loss by allowing 10 runs, nine earned, on nine hits in five plus innings of work. He also walked four and threw three wild pitches.
Roberts led the offense with four hits, while Batlle, Pence, Taylor and Bozarth each collected two. Preston knocked in four runs and Deevers three.
The Mavericks and Roadrunners will be back on the diamond tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.
