ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington softball squad tied the school record for Southland Conference wins Saturday afternoon as it swept a doubleheader with Louisiana-Monroe and improved to 18-2 in the league. The first place Lady Mavericks edged past the Lady Indians in both games, winning each by a score of 1-0.
UTA broke open a scoresless game in the bottom of the third inning as Ali Lommel plated pinch runner Katie Singleton with a single down the left field line to put UTA ahead, 1-0.
The one run in the third inning turned out to be the difference as the Lady Mavericks connected for eight hits, but couldn't push a run across as they left seven runners on base.
Jill Garro picked up the win, improving her record to 9-8 on the year. Garro struck out five and scattered two hits.
Sarah Freeman took the loss for the Lady Indians, falling to 6-9 on the year.
The first game of the afternoon was a pitchers dual throughout.
UTA starter Katy Cox held the Lady Indians hitless until she gave up back to back singles in the top of the sixth inning. Cox escaped the late threat, striking out the Southland Conference's top hitter Casey Goodman and striking out Connie Coleman to end the inning.
Autumn Petrino hit a two-out double in the bottom of the sixth frame to put a runner in scoring position for the Lady Mavs. Jenna Fortune followed with a RBI single up the middle to plate Petrino and put UTA ahead, 1-0.
The Lady Indians went down in order in the top of the seventh as UTA edged past seventh place ULM, 1-0.
Cox earned the win as she improved to 21-5 on the year. Cox struck out eight and scattered two hits as she threw her ninth complete game shutout.
ULM starter Ashley Bellew was tagged with the loss as she fell to 5-12 on the year.
Texas-Arlington will close out this weekends league series on Sunday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field. First pitch in the finale with the Lady Indians is set for 1 p.m.
