SAN ANTONIO, Texas... The University of Texas at Arlington knocked out 17 hits for the second consecutive day on their way to a 12-6 victory over Texas-San Antonio Saturday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
The Mavericks (24-15, 12-2 SLC) got on the board in the second inning as Hunter Pence and Scott Williams reached on free passes. With one out, Paul Bruder doubled down the left field line scoring Pence from second. Dan Dody was hit by a pitch and with two outs, Kasey Baker delivered a two-RBI single through the left side. Chris Taylor followed with a run producing single through the left side for the fourth run of the inning.
UTSA (18-18, 5-9 SLC) got a run back in the second inning as Josh Menn reached on a fielding error by Baker. A failed pickoff attempt by Ricky Stover allowed Menn to advance to third. Phillip Gentry drove in the run with a sacrifice fly to center field.
UTA added two runs in the third inning via the big fly as Scott Williams delivered his third home run of the season over the left center field wall scoring himself and Ryan Roberts, who walked and stole second base.
The 'Runners got a pair of runs back in the third inning as the first three batters reached on singles, loading the bases. Jeremy Blilie drove in the first run with a base on balls and Matt Srp delivered a sacrifice fly to center field to score the second run.
The Mavs plated their seventh run of the game in the fourth inning as Taylor blasted a two out solo shot over the left field wall for his fifth jack of the season.
UTA stuck again in the fifth inning as they loaded the bases on a Pence single through the left side, a Williams double to left center and Robby Deevers being hit by a pitch. Bruder grounded into a double play allowing Pence to score from third.
The Maverick bats came calling again in the seventh inning as Williams delivered a one out double down the right field line and scored on Deevers' single back through the box. Bruder followed with a single throught left side scoring Deevers with the 10th run of the game.
UTSA got a run back in the seventh inning as a leadoff walk and back-to-back singles scored the fourth run of the game.
The Mavs got another run in the eighth inning as Baker singled through the left side and stole second. Ryan Roberts delivered a two-out single back through the box to score Baker from second.
UTA struck again with two outs in the ninth as Bruder delivered a double to left center field and Darrell Preston delivered a run producing single through the right side.
The 'Runners added two runs in the home half of the ninth as they collected three straight extra base hits off reliever Michael Garza.
Stover (6-0) picked up the victory by pitching eight strong innings allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits with six strikeouts. Trey Rice (2-4) took the loss by allowing seven earned runs on five hits, with six strikeouts, in four innings of work.
Williams led the offense with four hits and three runs scored. Baker and Bruder each collected three hits and Taylor had two. Baker, Taylor, Williams and Bruder each two runs batted in. As a team, UTA collected 17 hits for the second consecutive day.
The Mavericks and Roadrunners will close out their three-game set with a 1 p.m. Sunday matinee at Roadrunner Field.
