ARLINGTON, Texas...The University of Texas at Arlington softball squad edged past Sam Houston State, 3-2, Saturday afternoon as the Lady Mavericks completed the three-game sweep of the Bearkats. With the win, UTA improves to 33-14 overall and 21-3 in the Southland Conference.
The Bearkats opened the game with a two run first inning to take an early lead over UTA. Third baseman Erin Lindsey hit a single to left to plate two Sam Houston runners.
UTA managed to cut into the Bearkat lead in the bottom of the third frame when senior Melanie Williams scored on an error by the SHSU first baseman.
The Lady Mavericks tied the game in the bottom sixth inning as Crystal Krebs hit a lead off single, and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Bearkat shortstop. Pinch runner April Jones scored on a RBI double by Jenna Fortune to tie the score at two runs apiece.
Williams led off the bottom of the seventh with an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Beverly Rowan. Williams stole third with two outs before Ali Lommel laid down a squeeze bunt to score Williams and give UTA the 3-2 win.
Jill Garro earned the win for UTA in a 3.1 inning relief effort. Garro struck out four while being touched for two hits. UTA starter Katy Cox struck out four and gave up two earned runs in 3.2 innings of work.
Texas-Arlington returns to action next weekend when it travels to face Stephen F. Austin for a three game Southland Conference series in Nacogdoches. First pitch in Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
