NORMAN, Oklahoma...Junior first baseman Darrell Preston doubled off the left center field wall to score Ryan Roberts, who doubled to start the inning, to give The University of Texas at Arlington the lead in the ninth inning on its way to an 11-9 victory over Oklahoma Tuesday evening at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Paul Bruder added an insurance run in the ninth inning as singled to center field to score Preston with two outs.
The Mavericks got on the scoreboard in the first inning as Roberts delivered a two-out single through the left side. After getting ahead in the count 3-0, Hunter Pence deposited a full count pitch over the 411ft mark in left center field for his sixth home run of the season.
The Sooners got a run back in the second inning as Greg Kish walked to start the inning and was sacrificed to second base. A balk moved the runner to third before a bloop single to right field by Denver Kitch scored the runner from third.
UTA got a run back in the third inning as Preston plated Roberts from second with a single up the middle with two outs. Roberts reached earlier in the inning on a walk.
OU gained its first lead of the game as it plated six runs in the third inning on just two hits, one Maverick error and three walks. The inning started with a double and a stolen base. A fielding error by second baseman Chris Taylor followed by walks to two of the next three hitters loaded the bases with one out. B.J. Brandenberger walked in a run to tie the game up and end his day. Pierce Loveless gave up a sacrifice fly and a three-run homer to Matt Arkison.
The Sooner lead was short lived as Shawn Menke started the fourth inning with a bloop single down the right field line and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Dustin Bozarth was hit in the side by a pitch after the first pitch of the at-bat went behind him. Kasey Baker made them pay as he hit his 20th double of the season off the bag at third base scoring Menke and Bozarth. With two outs, Roberts received his second free pass of the game and Pence delivered his second home run of the game over the exact spot in left center field for a three-run shot.
OU regained its lead in the sixth inning as four straight singles to start the inning, two bunt, tied the score up before Matt Bose delivered a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Sooners the lead.
UTA tied the game up in the eighth inning as Bruder started the inning with a double to left center field. With two outs, Baker singled to center field to knock in his third run of the game and tie the score.
Mike Snapp (3-4) picked up the victory by going 1.1 innings in relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two. Mike Swindell (2-5) took the loss by allowing three earned runs on six hits in five innings of relief.
Baker and Preston each collected two hits for the Mavericks, while Baker also drove in three. Pence collected two hits and drove in five runs, while Roberts collected two hits and scored four runs.
The Mavericks close out the regular season as they head to Beaumont for a key Southland Conference with conference leading Lamar beginning on Thursday, May 15. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
