Senior guard Jarrett Howell scored seven points in the overtime period to lead the Blue team to an 87-84 victory over the white in the first fall scrimmage of the 2004-05 season at Texas Hall Saturday.
Howell led all scorers with 20 points. Sophomore guard Stephen Floyd had 15 points and freshman forward Jermaine Griffin added 13 for the Blue. The White team used a balanced lineup with five in double figures -- senior center Stevin Ozier (19), freshman guard Baron Sauls and junior forward Kenneth Henderson (18 each), senior forward Chris Hairfield (17) and freshman walk-on David Holmes (10).
"I thought our defense needs a lot of work," said Head Men's Basketball Coach Eddie McCarter after the two-plus hour scrimmage. "Our freshman just haven't realized yet what it takes to compete at this level. We have a lot of work to do."
Hairfield had 10 first-half points to keep the White team close at halftime, 31-28.
The Blue opened the second half with a 16-10 spurt for a 47-38 lead after Howell converted a three-point play with 14:56 left in regulation. The lead swelled to 58-47 after Myles Guidry's layup.
The White team roared back in the final 5:00 of regulation.
Trailing 65-55, Henderson scored on a dunk off a steal, Sauls canned a three-pointer and Ozier followed a miss to trim the lead to 65-62 with 3:37 to play. After Floyd completed a three-point play to give the Blue a 72-67 lead with less than a minute to play, Sauls nailed a jumper and Hairfield hit his second three-pointer of the game to tie the game at 72-272 with 19.8 second to play.
In overtime, Howell took control. He hit a three-pointer to begin the scoring and the Blue never trailed from then on. Henderson was the top rebounder for the White team with nine boards, Griffin grabbed a team-high six boards for the Blue. Both Henderson and Sauls snared four steals apiece while the Blue was led by Roderick Epps and Howell with three each.
