ARLINGTON, Texas - The Texas-Arlington men's basketball team used a 19-0 run midway through the game to break away from Universidad de Puebla, 90-52, in an exhibition game at Texas Hall Tuesday.
Puebla went scoreless for an 8:10 span from the end of the first half until 15:30 remaining in the game to take a 52-25 lead after a Jay Neukomm free throw.
Freshman forward Larry Posey (Houston, Texas) came off the bench to lead all scorers with 13 points. Freshman Myles Guidry (11) and sophomore guard Stephen Floyd (11) also scored in double figures for UTA. The Mavs' freshmen combined for 46 points and 17 rebounds.
Puebla was led by Arturo Arciniega with 12 points and Jesus Martinez with 10.
"I thought we played better as the game went along and we got to see some of our young kids get some action," said UTA Men's Basketball Coach Eddie McCarter. "We still need more work on our defense, blocking out for rebounds and attacking pressure, but we will continue to work hard and get ready for conference play."
UTA shot 55.9 percent (19-of-34) from the field in the second half. The Mavs hit four of their first five field goals to spark a 13-0 run to start the half. Steven Thomas scored on a layup after a Floyd steal, then Thomas swiped a Puebla pass and fed to Floyd for a layin and a 43-25 lead with 19:00 to play in the game. Jarrett Howell canned a jumper and Floyd added another layup for a 48-25 edge with 17:43 left in the game.
UTA begins the 2004-05 season at TCU on Friday, Nov. 19. Tipoff is at 7:05 p.m.
