DENTON, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington and North Texas battled through eight innings in Sunday's finale of the North Texas/Beltin Round-Up with the Mean Green coming away with a 4-3 win. UTA closed out the tournament with a 2-4 weekend record and only pitcher Jill Garro was named to the all-tournament squad.
UTA (4-9-1) lead 3-1 heading into the fifth inning, but the Mean Green capitalized on the Lady Mavericks' errors to plate a run in each of the following innings to tie the game at three runs apiece and force the extra frame.
North Texas (5-16) pushed a run across in the top of the eighth and the Lady Mavericks couldn't manage the same as UNT earned the win, 4-3.
The Lady Mavericks out hit the Mean Green 7-5, but timely errors by the defense cost UTA the game. Garro (4-4) tossed the complete 8.0 innings, striking out 10 and scattering five hits while not allowing an earned run.
Texas-Arlington will open Southland Conference play Tuesday when McNeese State visits Arlington for a three-game series. First pitch in Tuesday's double header is set for 3 p.m. at Allan Saxe Field.
