NATCHITOCHES, La. - A three-run homer by Courtni Anderson provided the winning margin Sunday as The University of Texas at Arlington avoided a sweep of its Southland Conference softball series at Northwestern State by posting a 6-3 victory.
The Demons won Saturday's doubleheader 10-0 and 5-4. Northwestern couldn't hold a 2-0 lead Sunday after UTA scored three in the top of the fourth and added the eventual winning margin on Anderson's sixth-inning blast.
The Lady Mavericks got three straight singles to fill the bases in the fourth and an error allowed UTA to tie the game at two runs apiece. Elizabeth Brady delivered the go-ahead run on an RBI fielder's choice ground ball.
Anderson's home run made it 6-2. Northwestern got leadoff singles in the bottom of the seventh from Sarina Noack and Nicole Martin, followed by a sacrifice fly from Leftwich to make it 6-3, but the Demons couldn't get any further.
Texas-Arlington will host Houston for a 5 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday at Allan Saxe Field.
