NATCHITOCHES, La. - The University of Texas at Arlington softball squad dropped a doubleheader to Northwestern State, 10-0 and 5-4, Saturday afternoon at the Demon Diamond in Natchitoches, La.
The Lady Demons used a seven-run third inning and added three runs in the fourth to breeze past UTA 10-0. The Lady Mavericks managed only one hit off NSU starter Crista Miller. Miller struck out five in 5.0 innings of work as she improved to 3-8 on the year.
UTA's Jill Garro (6-8) was tagged with the loss after giving up eight earned runs in 4.0 innings of work.
The Lady Mavericks used a four-run sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead in the nightcap. Katie Singleton started the two-out rally with a single to left and Autumn Petrino followed with a run producing double to left center. Petrino scored on back-to-back errors by the shortstop and consecutive doubles by Amanda Haney and Dee Jay Nelson plated the final runs of the inning.
Northwestern State plated two runs in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at four runs apiece.
The Lady Demons put up the game-deciding run in the final frame as Krystale Nichols knocked a lead off home run over the left center field fence.
Freshman Lauren Hebert took the loss for UTA, falling to 1-3 on the year.
UTA and the Lady Demons will play the rubber game of the series Sunday at 1 p.m.
