DENTON, Texas - The University of Texas at Arlington softball squad used a pair of five-run innings to pound North Texas 10-2 in six innings Tuesday evening at Denia Park in Denton. With the win the Lady Mavericks improve to 13-15-1 overall.
UTA got on the board first after batting through the order in the top of the second frame. A two-RBI single by Katie Singleton plated the first two runs of the game before Amanda Haney and Courtni Anderson followed with run-producing singles of their own. April Jones sent the final run of the inning home with a fielders choice.
A lead off walk came back to haunt the Lady Mavs as North Texas plated its first run as Maxey hit a ground out RBI to plate the runner.
UNT pulled within three of UTA after Waters hit a two-out home run in the bottom of the fourth.
The Lady Mavericks used a five run sixth to end their second straight game by the mercy rule. Back-to-back singles from Jones and Kwasick put runners on first and second for UTA before Singleton knocked her second home run of the year to put the Lady Mavs in front, 8-2. Beverly Rowan's double sent Autumn Petrino, who reached after being hit by pitch, home for the ninth run of the game before Haney's squeeze bunt sent Rowan across the plate for the final run.
Freshman Lauren Hebert (3-4) earned the win for UTA after tossing 4.2 innings and allowing only two earned runs. Sophomore Jill Garro earned her first save of the year after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings.
UTA recorded a season high 12 hits and scored 10 runs for the second straight game. Singleton paced the Lady Mavs with three hits and five RBIs while Haney and Kwasnick chipped in two hits apiece.
Texas-Arlington will return to action Wednesday evening at Baylor. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
