LAS CRUCES, N.M. - In a rain-shortened day at the Hilton Las Cruces Softball Classic, the host Aggies dropped the Texas-Arlington Lady Mavericks 5-1 in the final game of the day.
UTA's afternoon game versus Purdue was cancelled due to rain in the Las Cruces, N.M., area.
After the Aggies took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third frame, the Lady Mavs evened the score with a Dee Jay Nelson RBI single up the middle. April Clougherty singled to left to open the frame and was sacrificed to second by Katie Singleton before scoring on Nelson's run-producing single.
NMSU lead off the bottom of the fifth with a double to right center followed by a Woods single up the middle to put runners on the corners for the Aggies. After a groundout advanced the trail runner, NMSU's Moore dropped a bunt single to load the bases with just one out. UTA jumped on the lead runner, throwing out Lebsack at home plate, allowing Gonzales to reach on the fielders choice before Knight singled to send home two and give the Aggies the lead.
The Aggies added two insurance runs in the final frame after a Lebsack two-RBI double.
Jill Garro was tagged with the loss for the Lady Mavs after allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 4.0 innings.
NMSU's Seagraves held UTA to just two hits, both in the fourth frame, and allowed just one run while fanning six in a complete game effort.
Texas-Arlington (2-5) will close out tournament action tomorrow at 9 a.m. versus Utah Valley State at the Field of Dreams in Las Cruces, N.M.
