HAMMOND, La. - For the second straight game Southeastern Louisiana used extra innings to defeat Texas-Arlington 3-2 in a Southland Conference match-up in Hammond. The Lady Lions claimed the first game of Saturday's doubleheader by a 7-6 count in 10 innings.
SLU got on the board first after K. Smith connected for her second home run of the afternoon in the home half of the second inning.
The Lady Mavericks evened the score in fourth. Jenna Fortune doubled to left center and Amanda Swofford followed with a single up the middle to put runners on the corners for the Mavs. After a fielder's choice and a walk to load the bases, April Clougherty singled to plate Fortune and tie the game at one run apiece.
Heading into extra innings for the second straight game, Katie Jones lead off the UTA eighth with an infield single. Jones was sacrificed to second by Fortune and scored on a Kristin Moore pinch hit single through the right side to give UTA the lead.
However, the Lady Lions answered again, matching the Lady Mavs run and adding another. The tying run came home on a Szmergalski triple to right center while the game-winner scored on an Eilizabeth Fuentes wild pitch.
Lauren Hebert got the start for the Lady Mavs, tossing 6.1 innings and allowing one run on four hits in a no decision. Fuentes (2-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in just one inning of work.
UTA outhit the Lady Lions for the second straight game. Swofforrd paced the Lady Mavs with two hits.
The squads will meet for the final game of this three-game set Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. at North Oak Park.
