ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas-Arlington earned its third Southland Conference shut out and snapped a two-game losing skid as the Lady Mavericks blanked Nicholls State 3-0 Saturday afternoon in game one of a doubleheader at Allan Saxe Field.
UTA (7-10, 3-1) struck first, capitalizing on sloppy defense by the Lady Colonels to plate two runs in the home half of the second. Autumn Petrino led off the frame with a single up the middle and stood on third after an error by the Nicholls State first baseman. With runners on the corners UTA completed the double steal as Petrino slid around the tag at home to give the Lady Mavs a 1-0 advantage. Swofford would score the final run of the frame on a miscue by Nicholls State's Leah Peterson.
The Lady Mavericks pushed one run across in the sixth after Amanda Swofford worked a lead off walk and scored as Courtni Anderson knocked a grounder to second base.
Nicholls State threatened in the seventh after a lead off double by Lindsey Coleman and an infield single from pinch hitter Alaina Vardell put runners on the corners with nobody out. UTA starter Jill Garro escaped the threat with a strike out and a double play to end the frame.
Jill Garro tossed her sixth complete game of the year, allowing just five hits and no runs as she improved to 3-6.
Nichole Wagner (3-3) was tagged with the loss for the Lady Colonels after allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits in a complete game effort.
The squads will complete the doubleheader this afternoon with a 4:15 first pitch and play the series finale Sunday at 12 p.m.
