ARLINGTON, Texas - Jill Garro allowed just five hits in six innings and the Lady Mavericks tied a season high with 11 hits as Texas-Arlington handed Stephen F. Austin a 6-0 loss Sunday in the finale of a Southland Conference series at Allan Saxe Field. The squads split Saturday's doubleheader.
The win improves UTA to 16-22 overall and 12-11 in the league while SFA falls to 16-27 and 8-16.
The Lady Mavericks got on the board in the home half of the first. Katie Jones singled and was sarificed to second before scoring on Autumn Petrino's single to left center.
UTA added a run in the second after an April Clougherty RBI fielder's choice.
Petrino opened the UTA third with a walk and Jenna Fortune followed with a double off the wall in left field to plate the run. Amanda Swofford singled back through the box to plate Fortune and push the Lady Mavs advantage to four.
Back-to-back walks and an intentional walk to Petrino loaded the bases with one out for UTA in the fourth. The Lady Mavs managed to push just one run across on a Fortune RBI fielder's choice.
The Ladyjacks threatened in the fifth as Jessica Tullos and pinch hitter Kristin Gabourie singled with no outs. The runners advanced on a ground out but UTA starter Jill Garro struck out Carrie Woydziak and enticed a pop up to escape the SFA threat.
UTA used three hits and a Petrino RBI ground out to add a run in the sixth.
Garro (11-11) earned the win for the Lady Mavs after being touched for five hits in 6.0 innings of work.
Fortune led the Lady Mavs at the plate with three hits and two RBIs while Katie Jones and Amanda Swofford added two hits apiece.
UTA closes out regular season play April 23-24 when it plays host to Texas-San Antonio at Allan Saxe Field. First pitch in Saturday's doubleheader is slated for 2 p.m.
