SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Offense was the name of the game on Sunday as Texas-San Antonio outhit Texas-Arlington 19-10 and scored eight runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Mavs 16-10 Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field
UTSA (15-24, 9-6 SLC) got on the board in the first inning as a Maverick error and a hit by pitch put two on with two outs before a Chris Lewis single through the right side and a Mike McKennon bloop single to center field scored two runs. The Runners added a third run as the runner broke from first and was caught in a rundown, but stayed in it long enough for the run to score from third.
UTA (21-19, 10-5 SLC) got a run back in the third inning without the virtue of a hit as Scott Williams drew a leadoff walk and proceeded to steal second and third before scoring on a wild pitch.
The Runners responded with two more runs in the third inning as J.R. Voyles beat out an infield single to short and scored on a Ryan Crew double to right center. Stephen Holdren followed with a single to left center to score Crew.
UTA got two runs back in the fourth inning as Boomer Welles hit a solo home run to left center field. With two outs, Batlle doubled down the right field line and hustled to third on the error by the right fielder. Batlle came in to score as the shortstop booted the ball off the bat of Williams.
UTSA answered right back with a run in the home half of the inning as Lee Todesco singled through the left side and scored on a Sean Danielson double down the right field line.
The Mavs crept to within one run in the fifth inning as Nathan Warrick beat out a bunt single and Josh McSpadden single to right field. Warrick scored as the ball off the bat of Ryan Nelson went through the legs of the shortstop. McSpadden scored on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of David McLeod.
The scoring continued in the bottom of the sixth inning as back-to-back doubles from Lewis and McKennon plated one run and Ryan Saltzgaber followed with a run-producing single.
UTSA put the game away in the sixth inning they collected eight runs on seven hits in the inning. Lewis delivered a two-run shot and Danielson connected on a three-run shot in the inning.
The Mavs got two runs back in the seventh as Wariick started the inning with single to left field and Nelson delivered a two-run home run to left center.
UTA plated three more runs in the ninth inning as McSpadden walked, Nelson singled and Welles walked to load the bases. UTA did not need to swing the bat to get the three runners in as McSpadden and Nelson scored on wild pitches, and Welles came in to score on a passed ball.
Michael Gardner (3-4) took the loss as he allowed five runs, two earned, on six hits in three innings of work. Caleb Barton (3-5) picked up the victory as he allowed five runs, three earned, on five hits in five innings of work.
Warrick, McSpadden, Nelson and Welles each collect two hits, while Nelson drove in two.
The Mavs return to action Tuesday evening when they travel to take on Oklahoma. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
