ARLINGTON, Texas - The Texas-Arlington baseball team had a golden opportunity in the bottom of the eighth inning as they loaded the bases with nobody out, but failed to score as McNeese State took the second game of the series 3-2 Saturday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark. The victory clinched the series for the Cowboys and is the sixth straight victory over the Mavs.
Brett Lewis started the inning by being hit by a pitch before advancing to second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch. Aaron Batlle and Nathan Warrick followed with back-to-back four-pitch walks to load the bases without the MSU pitching staff throwing a strike. Josh McSpadden followed by hitting into the 1-2-3 double play and Ryan Nelson walked to reload the bases. Boomer Welles ended the inning by grounding out to second.
The Cowboys (17-26, 6-11 SLC) got on the board in the third inning as Bryan Cartie blooped a double down the right field line and scored on Taylor Faul's double to left field.
UTA (21-22, 10-7 SLC) got the run back in the home half of the inning as Joe Newman started the inning with a single through the right side. Newman stole second and advanced to third when the catcher's throw bounced into center field. Lewis drove in Newman with a groundout to short.
MSU took the lead in the sixth inning as Charlie Kingery drew a walk and scored on Chris Fontenot's home run to right field.
UTA added its second run in the sixth inning as Warrick singled up the middle, extending his hit streak to 14 games, before stealing second. After advancing to third on a groundout, Ryan Nelson drove in the run with a groundout to short.
Jake Baxter (7-3) dropped his second straight decision as he allowed three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts in his fourth complete-game of the season.
Cameron Chandler (3-6) picked up the victory by allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits in seven innings of work. Danny Davis earned his third save be recording the final six outs.
The Mavs and Cowboys close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
