ARLINGTON, Texas - Texas-San Antonio's bats were too much for the Lady Mavericks as the Roadrunners pounded out 14 hits in defeating host Texas-Arlington 10-1 Sunday afternoon in Southland Conference softball action.
The loss drops the Lady Mavericks to 17-24 overall and 13-13 in league play while UTSA improves to 37-16 and 18-5.
Jessica Rogers doubled with two out in the opening frame to get things started for the Roadrunners. Aimee Murray followed with a run-producing single and Jennifer Davis doubled to give UTSA an early 2-0 advantage.
UTSA went back to work in the third as Rogers worked a lead off walk and scored on back-to-back singles by Murray and Davis. Jessica Els plated two runs with a single to right field and Amanda Horton followed with a RBI single of her own to chase UTA starter Jill Garro from the game. Liz Fuentes entered in relief, hitting a batter and walking one to load the bases for the 'Runners with two out. Fuentes allowed just one run to score on a Mel Torres sacrifice fly as she struck out Jenny Garcia to end the threat.
Davis led off the UTSA fourth with a solo home run over the right field wall, her 12th long ball of the season. Els singled and Horton took a Fuentes pitch deep for her fifth round-tripper of the year to give UTSA a 10-0 advantage.
UTA got one run back in the home half of the fourth. April Clougherty singled to left field and scored on an Autumn Petrino double.
Garro was tagged with the loss for UTA after allowing seven runs on nine hits. Ursula Mares (18-7) earned the win for the 'Runners after being touched for just three hits and one earned run.
Katie Jones, Clougherty and Petrino each connected for a hit in the contest for the Lady Mavs. Davis and Horton paced UTSA with three hits apiece.
Texas-Arlington will return to action May 6-8 at the SLC Tournament in Hammond, La.
