HONOLULU, Hawai'i - UTA won three games on Sunday, capped off by a 10-0 whitewashing of Loyola Marymount to capture the 2006 Oceanic Time Warner Cable Hawaii Paradise Classic late Sunday.
Despite losing its first two games of the tournament, UTA (4-4) earned its first reguar-season tournament title since winning the UTA Triangular Tournament in 1993 over Oklahoma and New Mexico State. UTA's last tournament title in tournament with a large field was the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla. in 1988.
After three scoreless innings, UTA opend the floodgates with seven runs on four hits, two walks, two hit batters and one LMU error. Walks hurt the Lions in the top of the fifth inning, as UTA scored three more runs on three walks and two hits to complete the game shortened by the 10-run rule.
UTA senior Jill Garro took the five-inning shutout for the win.
