NINE-RUN EXPLOSION LIFTS MAVS PAST SHOCKERS, 12-1

Feb. 17, 2006

Box Score

IRVING, Texas - UTA erupted for nine runs in the seventh inning to break out for a 12-1 victory over Wichita State in the second game of the 2006 UTA Invitational here Friday.

The tournament has been shortened to one day after inclement weather loomed over the Metroplex throughout Friday and sleet and rains expected the rest of the weekend.

After hitting just five home runs as a team a year ago, UTA had two in the game with Jenna Fortune hitting her third of the season and a grand slam by first baseman Dee Jay Nelson.

The seventh inning saw the Mavericks end 13 batters to the plate. After Katie Jones ground out to open the inning, UTA had 12 straight runners reach base, including Nelson's grand glam shot over the right-field fence.

Jill Garro (3-2) chilled the Wichita State offense, scattering three hits while striking out a career-best 14.

Wichita State (3-4) rebounded from the loss and defeated James Madison 3-1 in eight innings later in the day.

The final game had James Madison dominating Prairie View 11-0 in five innings.
