THIBODAUX, La. - The UT-Arlington softball team flexed its offensive muscle Saturday as they pounded out 23 hits in a doubleheader sweep of Nicholls State here Saturday afternoon.
UTA (11-8, 5-0) defeated the Colonels (6-14, 2-3) 7-5 and 12-1 to remain undefeated in Southland Conference play.
In game one, UTA staked a 7-1 lead before hold off the Colonels 7-5. Jill Garro (6-4) picked up the win after scattering six hits over seven innings. NSU mounted a late rally as Kathryn Harrell and Leslie Bourgeois slapped a two-run home run each to trim the lead to 7-5 in the sixth inning.
UTA piled up 12 hits -- 11 singles -- in the first game of the day. Courtni Anderson went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Katie Jones, Dee Jay Nelson and Jenna Fortune each has two hits.
In game two, Laura Jones went the distance in the 12-2 route.
Again, the Mavs offense shined with 11 hits. Autumn Petrino went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Fortune went 2-for-3 with two RBI as nine different players collected a hit.
"Overall, I was pleased with the way we played today," said UTA Softball Coach Debbie Hendrick. "I thought we did a good job of cleaning up our play in game two. We eliminated some pitching mistakes we made in the first game and I thought we played solid defense in the second game. We are going to try and get the sweep tomorrow, but it has been a successful weekend when you can grab two wins on the road."
UTA will wrap up the series at Nicholls State tomorrow at noon. The Mavericks return at Allan Saxe Field Tuesday when they host texas Southern in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
