THIBODAUX, La. - Senior lefthander Jill Garro scattered six hits and struck out seven to lead UT-Arlington to a 5-1 win over Nicholls State in Southland Conference softball play at the Colonel Diamond Sunday afternoon.
Garro (7-4) won her third decision in her last four starts. She was staked an 1-0 lead and never let the Colonels mount a serious threat. UTA broke the game open with three runs in the sixth inning to build a commanding 5-1 lead.
UTA never trailed on the scoreboard during the weekend. The Mavericks loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning but could score just one run. A single by first baseman Dee Jay Nelson to left field scored Autumn Petrino for an early 1-0 lead.
In the third inning, Jenna Fortune singled and advanced t o third after a throwing error by NSU catcher Pacheco and a outfield error. Nelson collceted her seacond RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Sophomore Katie Jones broke the game open in the sixth inning with a two-run double to score April Clougherty and Kristin Moore. got two RBI from first baseman
Fortune finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate and was the only Mavs to collect multiple hits on Sunday.
UTA returns to play Tuesday when they host Texas Southern in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Allan Saxe Field.
