NEAR PERFECTION

March 14, 2006

Box Score

Oh so close.

Sophomore pitcher Laura Jones had a perfect game until Adrianne Rocha singled to left field with two outs in the seventh inning UT-Arlington's 3-0 win over Texas Southern at Allan Saxe Field Tuesday afternoon.

Jones (4-2) faced one batter over the minimum and struck out eight en route to the complete-game win.

"She just hung a drop pitch there at the end," said UTA Softball Coach Debbie Hedrick. "I think she realized that she had a perfect game going at the very end.

"Laura has done a great job this season. She allows her defense to help her and she has taken the mound every game and given us a chance to win. When her drop (pitch) is on it is a great pitch."

Shortstop Amanda Swofford roped a one-out triple and first baseman Dee Jay Nelson hit a solo home run to left field to ignite the Mavs' three-run fifth .

The win stretched UTA (14-8) stretched it win streak to five games. Texas Southern falls to 3-22.

UTA returns to Southland Conference action Saturday when the Mavericks face Northwestern State in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
