Southeastern Louisiana center fielder Katie Szmergalski left fielder Brooke Lockhart combined to go 6-for-7 at the plate with four runs scored and three RBI as the Lady Lions took advantage of five UT Arlington errors for a 6-2 victory in the final game of a three-game series at Allan Saxe Field Sunday afternoon.
The loss drops UTA (16-10, 8-2) out of first place in the SLC, after Texas-San Antonio defeated Stephen F. Austin to improve to 10-2 in league play. Southeastern Louisiana improves to 8-17 overall and 4-8 in league play.
Batting in the Nos. 8 and 9 spots in the lineup, Szmergalski went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Lockhart went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.
SELU took advantage of two errors in the second inning to stake themselves to a 4-0 lead.
Lockhart doubled down the left field line and then Szmergalski followed with a line drive over the centerfielder to score Lockhart for a 1-0 lead. Amber Gentry reached base on an error by freshman Adika Snider that allowed Szmergalski to score for a 2-0 edge. Michelle Lemons collected an RBI with a sacrifice hit to Garro and Heather Sherrill made it 4-0 with a single to score Jenaye Zeringue.
Lockhart's solo home run to left field made it 5-0 in the third inning. The Lady Lions added another run in the fifth inning when Szmergalski drove Lockhart home from third.
UTA, who was held one hit in the first four innings, scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning. Deejay Nelson scored from second on a Courtni Anderson single and Katie Jones followed with an RBI single to score Anderson to make it 6-2.
Rachael Schwartz (8-7) got April Clougherty to fly out to collect her 11th complete game of the season.
Jill Garro (9-6) lasted two innings before being replaced by sophomore Laura Jones.
UTA returns to action Wednesday when they host Louisiana Tech in a doubleheader at 4 p.m.
