ARLINGTON, Texas - The Texas-Arlington women's tennis team defeated Lamar, 4-2, in the semifinals of the 2006 Southland Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon at the UTA Tennis Center.
Lamar crept out to an early lead, taking two of the three doubles matches. Juniors Simri van Rooyen and Monika Peciulionyte were the only Lady Mavericks to win in doubles, defeating Tanya Roberts and Pamela Martinez, 8-3.
In singles play, Texas-Arlington (12-8) took control winning four of the first five matches to take the overall match. Freshman Klara Jagosova took out SLC Player of the Year Andrea Martinez, 6-3, 6-4, at the number one position. At number two singles, junior Daniela Novokova bested Tara Shelander, 6-3, 6-2. Van Rooyen kept it rolling, beating Tanya Roberts, 6-4, 6-1, and Peciulionyte knocked off Pamela Martinez, 6-1, 6-1, at the number four position.
The victory puts the Lady Mavericks into the championship match where they will face top-seeded Southeastern Louisiana. Texas-Arlington lost to SE Louisiana, 4-3, in Hammond, La., earlier in the season.
Texas-Arlington will be back in action Sunday when they host SE Louisiana in the championship match of the SLC Tournament. First-serve is set for 12 p.m. at the UTA Tennis Center.
