UT Arlington senior pitcher Jill Garro scattered four hits and struck out eight as she shutout Louisiana-Monroe for the second time in two days in the Mavericks' 5-0 win in Southland Conference softball action Sunday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field.
UT Arlington (24-12, 13-3) won its fifth straight game and seven of their last eight to set up a showdown with league-leader Texas State Friday at Allan Saxe Field. ULM (20-25, 5-13) dropped its sixth straight league game.
Garro (14-7) tossed her second straight shutout and her fifth complete-game victory in her last six starts.
"Jill has had three nice starts in a row," said UTA Head Softball Coach Debbie Hedrick of the senior who has allowed on run (unearned) in her last 21 innings pitch. "She has been able to bow up and make pitches in some tough situations and we need that if you are going to compete for a championship."
Autumn Petrino's solo home run to right field with one out in the first inning gave Garro all the run support she would need. UTA followed with two more runs in the third when Petrino's double to left center scored Katie Jones. Petrino later scored on a fielder's choice by Jenna Fortune for a 3-0 lead.
The Mavericks put the game out of reach with two more runs in the fifth when Fortune hit a two-run double down the right field line to score Petrino and Jones.
UTA continues its 10-game homestand Saturday when they host Big 12 foe Texas Tech Wednesday in a 4 p.m. doubleheader.
