SOFTBALL HANDS MINERS FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON 6-1

LAS CRUCES, N.M. - UT Arlington softball downed UT El Paso, 6-1, in its second game of the Troy Cox Classic. Senior Dee Jay Nelson led the Mavs (4-3) offense while junior right hander Laura Jones allowed only one run in four innings on the mound.

The Miners (5-1) lone run came in the bottom of the third on a solo homer to left field.

The Mavericks plated a pair of runs in the first and second frames to lead 4-0. In the second Nelson hit her 14th career home run to give UTA the four-run lead.

UTA's Brittany Stevens tacked on run number five in the fifth to push the Mavs lead to four (5-1). In the sixth junior left fielder Katie Jones ripped her first home run of the season to secure the 6-1 win.

The Mavs will continue action in Las Cruces on Saturday as it is scheduled to meet Central Michigan at 10 a.m. followed by a 5:30 p.m. first pitch with host New Mexico State.
