ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington softball won both of its games in day two of the UTA Round Robin Classic. The Mavs (8-7) won their first game of the day 10-6 over Pittsburgh (0-6), and shut out Prairie View A&M (1-4) 18-0 in five innings to close-out day two. With her 249th career win head coach Debbie Hedrick becomes the winningest softball coach in UTA history.
In the first game the Mavs jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the middle of the fourth with three runs in the first, one in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth. Senior Courtni Anderson got UTA on the board with two RBI single to plate Dee Jay Nelson and Katie Jones. Center fielder April Clougherty singled up the middle to drive in catcher Heather Collie for the 3-0 lead.
In the fourth Cara Hulme hit a triple to score Courtni Anderson and Nelson followed by a double from Samantha Chumchal to plate Clougherty and extended the Mavs lead to eight.
Pittsburgh cut UTA's lead to three (9-6) with a trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, but he Mavs added a security run in the top of the sixth for the four run (10-6) cushion.
Junior Laura Jones (2-3) recorded the win over Pittsburgh with six strike outs in 4.2 innings of work. For Pitt Laura Belardinell recorded the loss giving up six runs on nine Maverick hits.
Pittsburgh won its second game of the day 15-1 over Prairie Voew.
In UTA's second game of the day it jumped onto the board with two runs in the first inning and added two more in the third for the 4-0 advantage. In the top of the third the Mavs busted the game wide open scoring 11 runs on seven hits to lead 15-0. UTA added three runs in the fifth and allowed only one Panther hit to end the game in five.
Against Prairie View junior Katie Jones and freshman Heather Fortenberry combined to go 8-for-8 scoring six runs and driving in eight more. Hulme (3-4) recorded the win with five strike outs in five innings of work allowing only two Panther hits.
UTA Round Robin action continues on Sunday with Pittsburgh and Prairie View kicking off day three at 11 a.m. The Mavs will face-off with Pitt at 1:30 p.m. to close out the action.
