ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington softball swept both games in its Southland Conference opening double header against Texas State on Tuesday at Allan Saxe Field. Junior Katie Jones led the Mavs going 4-for-6 including her fifth home run of the season. With the win UTA improves its overall record to 11-7 and 2-0 in conference play.

Freshman right hander Heather Fortenberry (4-0) picked up the 4-1 win the first game with seven strike outs in seven innings of work, while junior right hander Laura Jones (3-3) took the win 2-1 in the night cap in 5.1 innings on the mound.

In the first game, a pair of walks in the top of the first helped the Bobcats gain an early edge when Newton scored on a wild pitch, but UTA answered in the bottom frame with an RBI single to center off the bat of Fortenberry.

UTA struck again in the third inning with an RBI double from Dee Jay Nelson to score center fielder April Clougherty to give the Mavs the 2-1 lead. The Mavs added two runs in the sixth for the three run advantage.

In the seventh the Bobcats threatened to score when they brought the tying run to the plate, but center fielder Jetta Weinheimer flew out to center field to end the game.

Katie Jones and Courtni Anderson got the Mavericks started in game two with back-to-back home runs in the first frame to put UTA up 2-0.

Texas State had a chance to tie the game in the fifth after an Alex Newton double and UTA error, but pinch hitter Lacey Duncan struck out swinging with runners on second and third to end the frame.

An inning later the Bobcats again threatened and this time came through with a run when Ali McCormack hit a RBI double to right center that plated Jill Kloesel and cut the Mavs lead in half, 2-1. UTA held on to came out on top when with two outs Leah Boatright lined a shot that ricocheted off pitcher Casey Clifton to Courtney Anderson for the third out.

UTA will look for the three game sweep when it closes the series with Texas State on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Allan Saxe Field.
