ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington softball swept Northwestern State 6-5, 10-1 in Southland Conference action at Allan Saxe Field on Saturday. Freshman Brittany Washington hit a walk-off grand slam in the fifth inning of game two to improve UTA's record to 15-10 overall and 5-3 in SLC play.
UTA got on the board first in game two with three runs in the bottom of the second for the early lead. Senior Courtni Anderson scored the first run on a wild pitch from Michelle Castellano. Left fielder Katie Jones hit a single up the middle to plate third baseman Courtney Anderson and short stop Amanda Swofford for the 3-0 lead.
Northwestern State scored a single run in the top of the third to cut the Mavs lead to two (3-1), but the Mavs extended their lead to four with two runs in the fourth.
Dee Jay Nelson started off the fifth inning with a single down the left field line followed by a single from designated player Samantha Chumchal to place runners on first and second. Swofford drew the walk to load the bases when Courtney Anderson singled to left field to drive in April Clougherty who pinch ran Nelson. With the Mavs up 6-1 Washington hit her third home run of the season to score four and end the game.
Freshman right hander Heather Fortenberry (5-1) picked up her fifth win of the season with five innings of work allowing just one run on four hits. Castellano (6-6) took the loss for the Demons giving up ten runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings of work.
The Mavs started game one sitting down the first three Demon batters and then went on to score six runs in the bottom half of the first inning.
Katie Jones walked to lead off the game for UTA and then stole second to get into scoring position. With two outs Chumchal singled through the left side to plate Jones. Washington drew the walk to put runners on first and second when Swofford singled to plate Chumchal for the 2-0 lead. With runners on second and third Amanda Glenn walked back-to-back Mavericks to score Washington. Fortenberry followed with a two RBI single to center field and then Katie Jones hit a single to the short stop to plate Clougherty for run six.
After five scoreless innings the Demons got on the board in the top of the seventh with five runs, but the Mavs were able to hold on for the win.
Junior Laura Jones (5-4) recorded the win with four runs on five hits while freshman Cara Hulme recorded her first save of the season in one inning of work. Glenn (5-7) took the loss in six innings of work with five strike outs.
The Mavs and Demons will conclude their SLC series with game three at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Allan Saxe Field.
