ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington outfielder David Newby went 3-for-5 with five RBIs, including his first career home run as the Mavericks scored early and often in collecting 22 hits in a 20-2 victory over Northwestern Friday night at Clay Gould Ballpark. It was the first time UTA scored 20 runs in a game since defeating Grambling 22-3 on March 26, 2002.
Newby was not the only offensive star for the Mavs as David McLeod, Mitch Putman and Leo Radkowski each collected three hits. The Mavs collected 10 extra-base hits in the game.
The (5-9) Mavs got on the board in the first inning as a two-out rally pushed across two runs. Putman started the rally with a single through the left side and was followed by a Danny Slinkman double up the middle. Both runners scored when a hard-hit ball off the bat of Ben Burum was thrown away by the third baseman.
The offensive onslot continued in the second inning as Brock Wilson doubled to left center and scored on a Newby just inside the left-field line. After a sacrifice bunt, the third run was safe at the plate on a fielder's choice off the bat of Daniel Rieder. Putman followed with a single through the right side before Slinkman drove in a run with a single through the right side. Radkowski and Kyle Rudy would follow with a pair of two-out RBI singles.
The second inning was just a precursor to the third as the Mavs collected seven more hits and took advantage of two Wildcats errors to push across eight more runs.
Newby started the inning by reaching on an error before scoring on McLeod's triple into the gap in right center. Rieder followed with an RBI groundout to second and Putman followed with a solo home run over the 335 sign in left field. With two outs, Ben Burum doubled, Radkowski singled and Wilson walked to load the bases. Newby drove in a run with a single through the left side before McLeod plated two runs with a double to left center and the third runner scored on an error by the center fielder.
The Wildcats (2-5) pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the seventh as an error and a Geoff Dietz double set up RBI groundouts from Tommy Finn and Tony Vercelli.
UTA answered back in the home-half of the inning as Radkowski singled and Rudy walked before Newby collected his first career home run.
Two more runs came across in the eighth as RJ Harris started the inning with a double and Matthew Sartor drew a two-out walk. Both runners would score on Collin Garner's double just inside the bag at first.
Chris Taylor (2-0) picked up the victory as he allowed three hits and struck out two in six scoreless innings. Cole Livermore (0-2) took the loss after allowing seven runs, five earned, on eight hits in just 1.2 innings.
The Mavs return to action tomorrow afternoon as they host New Mexico State at 2 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
