ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington softball completed a three game sweep of Sam Houston State with a 3-2 win on Sunday at Allan Saxe Field. With the win, junior right-hander Laura Jones improved her record on the mound to 8-4, while the Mavs improved their overall record to 21-11 and 11-4 in Southland Conference play.
After two score less innings, the Bearkats jumped on the board in the top of the third on a two out single up the middle from Casey Everitt to score Holli Hatcher.
The Mavs tied it up 1-1 in the home half of the inning when right fielder Brittany Washington scored on a sacrifice fly from left fielder Katie Jones. Jones added the Mavs second run of the game on a solo home run, her ninth of the season, to give UTA the 2-1 lead. Senior Dee Jay Nelson followed that with her eighth home run of the season to extend UTA's lead to two (3-1), heading into the seventh inning.
In the top of the seventh inning with two outs Amanda Lindsey hit a double to left center to score Kendra Spivey to bring SHSU with in one (3-2). The Mavs held on for the win forcing Amy Brown to pop-up to the pitcher.
Junior Katie Jones led the Mavs offensively going 1-for-2 with one run and two RBI. Both Jones and Nelson hit home runs in game three bringing their totals on the season to nine and eight respectively. Nelson only needs three more home runs to become the all-time leader at UTA.
The Mavs will be back in action on Wednesday when they welcome University of Missouri-Kansas City to Allan Saxe Field. First pitch of the double header is set for 5 p.m.
