ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington won both games of a non-conference double header with UMKC on Wednesday at Allan Saxe Field. The Mavs held on to win the first game 7-4 and ended the nightcap in six innings with the 10-2 win. UTA improves to 23-11 on the season while the Kangaroos fell to 2-26 overall.
Junior Kristin Moore went 3-for-4 to lead the Mavs on the day, scoring two runs on a pair of doubles and a homerun while driving in six. Moore's six RBI matches her total RBI for the previous two seasons and drive her total RBI for 2007 to 16.
In game one, freshman Brittany Washington put the Mavs on the board in the bottom of the second inning with her fourth home run if the season, driving in short stop Amanda Swofford who reached on a walk. Washington's homer was the 31st of the season for UTA, tying the teams pervious season high set in 2006.
UMKC cut UTA's lead in half with a single run in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice bunt from Monica Conisales to score Taia Jones. The Mavs answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning off a single from third baseman Courtney Anderson to plate catcher Samantha Chumchal for the two-run lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning first baseman Dee Jay Nelson hit a line drive down the right side to score left fielder Katie Jones and give UTA the 4-1 lead. With the bases loaded Anderson hit a single up the middle to drive in two runs and extend the Mavs lead to five (6-1) heading into the sixth inning.
The Kangaroos added two runs in the top of the sixth off a single from Conisales.
Nelson hit single down the right field line, in the bottom of the sixth, to score center fielder April Clougherty and Jones and extend the Mavs lead to five (8-3) heading into the seventh inning.
In the seventh UMKC's leadoff batter, Ashley Toft hit a double to right center to start the inning and scored on two passed balls, before Cori Mead grounded out to end the game.
Junior Laura Jones recorded the win in game one on six innings of work, giving up three runs on six hits while striking out three.
After two scoreless innings in game two, UTA got on the board in the bottom of the third when Moore scored on a fly ball to center field from Katie Jones.
Moore then drove in three more Maverick runs on a double to right field to give UTA the 4-0 lead heading into the fifth. UMKC's Taron Brewer hit a double down the right field line in the top of the fifth to score Alicia Baker and Ashley Toft, cutting UTA's lead to two (4-2).
In the bottom of the sixth inning pitcher Cara Hulme hit a double down the left field line to plate Washington to put the Mavs up 5-2. Catcher Heather Collie reached on a single advancing Hulme to third when Moore hit her second career home run to give UTA the 8-2 advantage. Jones scored run number nine on an error by the catcher giving UTA the seven-run lead 9-2. Then Swofford drew the walk with the bases loaded to score Anderson to end the game.
The Mavs will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to Lake Charles for an SLC series with McNeese State. The series will kick-off with the first game of a double header at 1 p.m. and conclude with a single game at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
