ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington softball split wins in a doubleheader with Tulsa on Wednesday at Allan Saxe Field. The Golden Hurricane won the first game 1-0, while the Mavs took the nightcap 5-0. UTA improves its record to 29-12 and Tulsa moves to 26-24 on the season.

In game two, first baseman Dee Jay Nelson hit a grand slam, to give UTA the early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. With her 10th homerun of the season, Nelson moves to within one of the UTA career home run record of 22 set by Cindy Spradling in 1982.

In the bottom of the fourth inning center fielder Kristin Moore hit a double to center field to score right fielder Brittany Washington who reached on a double to right center, giving the Mavs a 5-0 lead. UTA held off Tulsa over the next three innings for the win.

With the one-hit shutout, junior Laura Jones took the win improving her record to 11-4. In seven innings on the mound, Jones struck out two while walking none. Katie Lee took the loss for the Golden Hurricane giving up five runs, one earned with one walk and four strikeouts.

After four scoreless innings in game one, the Golden Hurricane jumped onto the board in the top of the fifth. Brooke Smart started the inning with the first hit of the game, a double to left center and advanced to third on a sac bunt from designated player Lindsay Tower. Angela Osbon hit a single to right center to score Smart and give Tulsa the 1-0 advantage.

The Mavs failed to score in the final three innings dropping their first game since March 18. Heather Fortenberry took the loss for UTA, only her second of the season. In seven innings on the mound, Fortenberry gave up only two hits while striking out seven. Jackie Lawrence (7-7) picked up the win for Tulsa with her second shutout of the season.

The Mavs will return to SLC action on Saturday as they travel to Hammond, La. for a three game series with Southeastern Louisiana. The first game of the double header is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start and the Mavs and Lions will close out the series at noon on Sunday.
