HAMMOND, La. - UT Arlington softball split wins in a SLC doubleheader with Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday. The Mavs dropped the first game 2-1, but came back to take the nightcap 9-3. UTA moves to 30-13 overall on the season and 15-5 in league play while SLU moves to 27-25 and 10-15.
In game one, Southeastern jumped out to a two-run lead in the bottom of the second, scoring the first run on a double from Arica Rodriquez who drove in Kaley Christy who reached on a walk. Rodriquez scored run number two for the Lady Lions on an out at first.
Designated player Amanda Brown hit a single to left field to drive in pinch runner Kristin Moore to cut the Lions lead to one, 2-1. The Mavs failed to close the gap as Courtni Anderson grounded out to the short stop to end the game.
Freshman Heather Fortenberry took the loss for UTA her third of the season. In six innings on the mound, she gave up two runs on three hits while striking out five. Rachel Ray improved her record to 17-9 on the season while only giving up one run on three hits.
In game two, the Mavs jumped on the board first taking a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the second. Catcher Amanda Brown and right fielder Brittany Washington started the inning by hitting back-to-back singles. Samantha Chumchal who pinch hit for second baseman Brittany Stevens drove in Brown on a single to give UTA the 1-0 lead. Washington scored run number two on a sacrifice fly from left fielder Katie Jones.
The Lady Lions took back the lead in the bottom of the second, 3-2 before UTA tied it up in the top of the third and then went ahead 4-3 on a sacrifice fly from Brown to score shortstop Amanda Swofford.
Center fielder April Clougherty added a run to give the Mavs a two-run cushion (5-3) in the top of the fourth.
In the Mavs half of the fifth inning Swofford kicked it off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a sac bunt. Clougherty hit her seventh double of the season to score Swofford and Washington who drew the walk, giving UTA the 7-3 adavantage.
In the top of the sixth, Nelson hit a line drive to left center to score Jones who drew a walk to start the inning. Washington scored the Mavs final run of the game on a fielders choice for the 9-3 win.
Laura Jones (12-4) went the distance in game two giving up three runs on five hits while striking out five. Southeastern went through four pitchers, but Nicole Schoenberger (1-3) took the loss in just 1.1 innings on the mound.
The Mavs and Lady Lions will conclude the conference series with a single game at noon on Sunday.
