LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The UT Arlington softball team closed out its trip to New Mexico with a win on Sunday, 3-2 over the host New Mexico State Aggies at the Hotel Encanto Invitational. Senior Amanda Swofford and sophomore Samantha Chumchal were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts this weekend.
Freshman Cassandra Nordie (2-0) picked up her second win of the season, giving up just two runs on four hits, while striking out 13 in seven innings of work. Kim Watson (1-3) takes the loss for the Aggies after giving up the winning run in the seventh inning.
New Mexico State struck early, putting two quick runs on the board in the first inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, UTA (3-6) evened the score with two runs of its own. Sophomore Brittany Washington led off the inning with a double to center field and was driven home when freshman Rebecce Collom hit the first home run of her college career.
In the seventh, Swofford started the inning with a single up the middle and advancing to third on error by the pitcher. With one out Chumchal's short pop out to second base was enough to get Swofford across the plate and UTA the 3-2 lead.
Nordie struck out the first Aggie batter in the home half of the seventh inning and forced the next two to fly out to secure the win for the Mavericks.
UTA has eight days to prepare for its next game, which just happens to be its Southland Conference opener at Texas State on Feb. 26 in San Marcos.
