RUSTON, La. - - UT Arlington baseball coach Darin Thomas said the Mavericks coaching staff can pick a few things here and there that his team did well in Tuesday's doubleheader against Louisiana Tech.

There were too few to make him happy about the trip.

"We just weren't very good," Thomas said of his team's 8-4 loss and Game 1 and 8-1 loss in Game 2. "We ran ourselves out of two innings. We couldn't field the ball with any consistency, particularly our middle infield, and at times we just looked overmatched. It wasn't good baseball at all."

The positives were a couple of pitchers, Ryan Robinson and Game 1 and freshman reliever Rett Varner in Game 2.

Robinson (0-1) kept the Mavericks in the game through five innings at J.C. Love field in Ruston, La.

But a late-inning collapse, four errors and 13 men left on base were too much to overcome. A junior from Southlake, Robinson allowed just three hits, but was hurt by five walks and a long third inning. Louisiana Tech took a 1-0 lead in the third after a leadoff single, and three consecutive walks. The Bulldogs added a run on a fielder's choice.

A five-run seventh inning put UTA down 8-0.

The Mavericks responded with two comeback attempts. With two on and nobody out in the seventh, leadoff hitter Michael Choice hit a grounder to shortstop, which was bobbled to load the bases. Evan Raley followed with a hard liner, which doubled Jay Pitschka off second. Danny Slinkman grounded to first to end the inning.

In the eighth, UTA plated four runs - helped by two hit batters, two errors and two singles - and had the bases loaded the tying run at the place. But a long fly out by Steffan Guest ended the threat. Knotts (1-0) earned the victory for the Bulldogs.

The Mavericks sent lefty Eamonn Donovan to the hill in the second game. The Bulldogs chased Donovan (0-1) in the second inning after Louisiana Tech had an 8-0 lead and 10 hits by the bottom of the fifth, and UTA couldn't mount a comeback attempt.

The Mavericks managed just five hits and committed three errors - which made for seven in the two games. Varner pitched three innings of relief, allowing just one hit and one run. Ryan Martin and Marcus Limon pitched two innings of scoreless relief.

Blake Holt homered for UTA's only run. David McLeod went 2-for-4, the only Mavericks hitter in Game 2 with multiple hits.

In Game 1, Holt went 2-for-4 and McPherson 2-for-3.
