HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Freshman Shalyn Martin scored a season-high 19 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead UT Arlington to a 94-61 Southland Conference women's basketball victory over Sam Houston State Thursday at Johnson Coliseum.
UTA (16-9, 11-3 SLC) hit 36-of-63 from the field (.571) and outrebounded the Bearkats 44-29. The Mavericks scored 40 of their 94 points in the paint.
Whitney Smith with 19 points and Brittany Brooks with 13 led Sam Houston State (1-25, 0-13 SLC). Also in double figures for UTA were Tamara Simmons with 18 points and Meghan Nelson and Candice Champion with 10 apiece.
The Mavericks led from buzzer to buzzer, going up 49-22 at halftime and leading by as many as 31 points, 62-31 in the second half.
UTA limited the Bearkats to 33.3 percent from the field as Sam Houston hit 20-of-60. Lydia Gonzales led both teams on the boards with eight rebounds. Simmons was the top rebounder for UTA with seven.
The Mavs will return home to host Stephen F. Austin on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Texas Hall for their second to last game of the regular season.
