ARLINGTON, Texas - - Lamar University scored six runs in the fourth inning and coasted to a 13-7 victory against UT Arlington in a Southland Conference game at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Game 2 of the three-game series resumes at 2 p.m. Saturday.
In Friday's SLC opener for both teams, Lamar (10-6, 1-0) got to Mavericks starter Nathan Long early, chasing him in the fourth inning and building a big lead. Long (3-1) suffered his first loss in four starts.
The Mavericks (5-11, 0-1) got a solid relief appearance from Ryan Martin, who went 51/3 innings and allowed just three hits and three runs, none earned. UTA committed three errors.
Lamar starter Matt Morgal (2-1) earned the victory after 51/3 innings of work.
Senior Danny Slinkman led UTA's offense with a 3-for-5 day, while David McLeod, Steffan Guest, Andrew Kainer and Jay Pitschka had two hits each.
