DENTON, Texas - Whitney Simpson's two-run home run gave UT Arlington an early lead, but North Texas rallied for a 3-2 victory Wednesday night in non-conference softball action at Lovelace Stadium.
The Mavericks (24-21) conclude the regular season this weekend at home with a three-game Southland Conference series against Central Arkansas, starting with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
UTA collected six hits, including Simpson's eighth homer of the season and doubles by freshman Rebecca Collom and senior Amanda Swofford. Sophomore Cara Hulme (15-6) allowed three runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings while striking out six and walking two.
Senior Katya Muller was 3-for-3, freshman Mallory Cantler was 3-for-4 with an RBI and freshman Courtney Bradshaw was 2-for-3 with her fifth homer for the Mean Green (25-31), which snapped a four-game losing streak.
Swofford led off the top of the second inning with a double to left field. One out later, she scored on Simpson's homer to right-center field. It was the freshman third baseman's third consecutive at-bat with a home run, following her fifth- and seventh-inning blasts against Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday.
UNT trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth inning with a two-out RBI single by senior Heather Bostic and knotted the score with Bradshaw's leadoff homer to left-center in the sixth inning.
Muller reached in the seventh with a one-out single, advanced to second on a sacrifice by freshman Mariza Martinez and scored the game-ending run on a base hit by Cantler.
