ARLINGTON, Texas - Quality pitching and a large quantity of power added up to a lopsided doubleheader sweep by UT Arlington against McNeese State on Saturday in Southland Conference softball action at Allan Saxe Field.
Senior Kristin Moore went 3-for-3 with five RBIs to lead the Mavericks (17-16, 11-9 SLC) to a 10-1 victory in five innings in the opener. The second game also ended early via the mercy rule when freshman Rebecca Collom smashed a grand slam to center field in the sixth inning to complete a 10-0 rout of the Cowgirls (15-27, 8-9).
UTA cleared the fence four times in the second game, including two homers by senior Amanda Swofford. She had a solo shot to left field in the fourth inning and a grand slam to left-center in the fifth inning. For the day, Swofford was 3-for-6 with seven RBIs.
Sophomore Cara Hulme (9-4) earned the victory in the opener, allowing one run on three hits while striking out eight and walking three. Senior Laura Jones (4-9) surrendered just two hits in six shutout innings in the second game. She fanned eight and walked four.
The three-game series concludes Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for noon. UTA will try to extend its winning streak to six.
The Mavericks struck early in game one with three runs in the first inning on a two-run double by Swofford and an RBI single by Moore. They extended their lead to 7-0 in the third. Moore drove in two more runs with a single up the middle. Swofford scored on a balk by MSU reliever Candace Duhon. Sophomore Samantha Chumchal brought Moore home with a sacrifice fly to left.
The Cowgirls scored their lone run of the afternoon in the fourth when Molly Guidry tripled and scored on a two-out single by Rachel King.
UTA answered with three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Junior Christina Allen scored on an error and Moore knocked in two more runs with a bases-loaded single past the shortstop.
In the second game, Swofford broke a scoreless tie with her fourth-inning home run.
Freshman Whitney Simpson led off the fifth inning with her fifth homer of the season, a towering drive to left field. The Mavericks loaded the bases with a single by Chumchal, a bunt single by Allen and a walk by senior Katie Jones. Swofford's eighth homer of the season gave UTA a 6-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, the Mavs loaded the bags again with walks by Simpson, senior Brittany Stevens and Jones. Collom swung at the first offering from Carmen Sittig and drove it over the wall in straightaway center to end the game.
For the day, Collom was 2-for-5 with four runs and four RBIs. Jones was 2-for-4 and scored five runs. Simpson was 3-for-5 with a homer and two runs scored.
