The 2011 freshmen class did not disappoint in day two of tournament action, as they carried the Mavericks to a 4-2 victory against Loyola-Chicago Friday morning in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Freshmen's Alexis Cantu, Callie Collins, and Rachel Forshaw led the Mavs at the plate and on the mound.
Offensively, the Mavericks had a better day at the plate as six Mavericks recorded hits which included a pair of two-run homers by freshmen's Cantu and Forshaw.
Collins (1-0) made her first collegiate start against the Ramblers. The freshman hurler pitched four complete innings, allowing zero runs on one hit while striking out six.
Cantu also made her first pitching appearance against the Ramblers. Cantu was called in the top of the fifth, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out three.
UT Arlington jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage in the second inning following a two-run homer by Forshaw. The freshman catcher plated Taylor Zink, who started the inning with a single to left field.
Cantu gave the Mavericks a 4-0 advantage in the bottom of the third when she connected on a two-run home run to right field.
The Ramblers made it interesting in the top of the fifth when Lauren Arceneaux led off with a single to left field and came around to score following a triple to right center by Olivia Bell. With runners at the corners, Loyola-Chicago's head coach Missy Beseres called a double steal which scored Bell from third, making it a 4-2 ball game.
Loyola-Chicago looked to score in the top of the seventh with two runners on base but the Mavericks defense stepped up and shut down the Ramblers.
The Ramblers Brittany Gardner (0-2) took the loss, tossing 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and striking out six.
Bell led Loyola-Chicago offensively going 1-for-2 with a triple and RBI.
