Final Stats
College Station, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team turned in a good performance in the final day of the 2011 Aggie Classic in College Station. The Mavericks improved to 5-5 on the season after earning a 10-4 win against Texas Southern Sunday afternoon.
UTA finished the tournament with a 3-2 record. The Mavs two losses came against No. 23 Texas A&M.
Senior Rebecca Collom finished the tournament batting .588 while freshman Stephanie Gonzalez wasn't far behind with a .571 average. Collom connected on 10 hits which included four doubles and a home run. The senior also drove in seven runs.
Gonzalez continues to produce offensively for the Mavericks. The freshman recorded eight hits which included a double, triple while driving in three RBI.
Alexis Cantu, Ashley McCarroll and Charne Office each recorded home runs in the tournament as well.
Pitching wise, all three of the Maverick hurlers recorded a win apiece. In two appearances, sophomore Teri Lyles recorded 13 strikeouts, 11 of those K's came against Wichita State (Feb. 19).
Against Wichita State, Cantu (1-1) picked up her first win of the season in the pitching circle. The Frisco native went the distance, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out three.
The Mavericks offense jumped on the Lady Tigers pitching in the first inning, plating three runs on four hits to lead 3-0.
After a scoreless second inning for both teams, UTA's McCarroll connected on a solo home run to left center, giving the Mavs a 4-0 advantage.
The Lady Tigers were able score a run in the top of the fourth after Y. Torres connected on a long ball to left field.
With the game score at 4-1, the Mavs offense came out in the bottom of the fourth fired up and recorded six runs on eight hits, to lead 10-1.
Texas Southern came back in the top of the fifth and scored three runs on three hits but that was all the Mavericks would allow.
Four Mavs finished with multi-hit performances against the Lady Tigers. McCarroll finished the game going 3-for-4 with three RBI, a home run and two doubles while Gonzalez, Collom, and LeFlore each recorded a pair of hits.
The Mavericks continue tournament action this weekend when they host their own beginning Friday, February 25-27. UTA opens their tournament against Centenary College on Friday at 3 p.m. at Allan Saxe Field.
