The UT Arlington softball team took the first two games of a three game series against Texas State Tuesday at Allan Saxe Field. The Mavericks recorded both games with 2-0 shutout victories.

With the pair of wins, UT Arlington improved to 10-7 overall and 2-0 in conference action.

The last time the Mavericks recorded back-to-back wins in a conference series against Texas State was in Arlington on February 27, 2007.

The UT Arlington softball team opened game one of their first conference series against Texas State with a 2-0 shutout win.

Fresh off a Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week honor, freshman Callie Collins dominated in the pitching circle and improved her overall record to 6-1. Collins went the distance, allowing zero runs on two hits and striking out two. It was Collins fourth complete game of the season.

Mavericks leading hitter Rebecca Collom gave UTA a 1-0 advantage in the third when she connected on a double to left center, scoring Courtney Zink from second. The double was Collom's sixth of the season and 29th of her career. The seniors 29 doubles ties her for fourth all-time in UTA history with former teammate Samantha Chumchal.

With one out, leadoff hitter Stephanie Gonzalez gave the Mavericks a 2-0 advantage in the fifth after she connected on her second home run of the season to left center.

In the final two innings, the Mavs pitching and defense took care of the Bobcats not allowing a hit.

UTA scattered three hits but that was all the Mavericks needed for the win. Collom, Gonzalez and Erica LeFlore accounted for UTA's three hits.

For the Bobcats, Anne Marie Taylor (3-2) took the loss, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits and walking two. Crystal Alaniz pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and walking two.

Texas State 0, UT Arlington 2
Sophomore hurler Teri Lyles (3-5) picked up her third win of the season in game two and led UTA to a 2-0 win. Lyles pitched a complete game, allowing zero runs on four hits while striking out four.

Newcomer Kersti Rowan and Erica LeFlore led the Mavericks offensively, both finishing with multi-hit performances. Rowan finished the game going 2-for-3 with a run scored while LeFlore went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a double.

LeFlore gave the Mavericks a 1-0 advantage in the second when she ripped a double to left center, scoring a speedy Rowan from second.

The catcher was clutch with the bases loaded in the fourth when she singled up the middle and scored pinch runner Kari Karr from third, giving the Mavs a 2-0 lead. Lyles was close to scoring UTA's third run of the game in the same inning but was caught in a pickle and thrown out at home.

In the Bobcats final at bat things got a bit shaky after Jenna Emery doubled to center field with one out. After a quick meeting from Head Coach Debbie Hedrick in the pitching circle, Lyles was able to get the final two batters to line out.

The Mavericks return to the diamond tomorrow for the final game against Texas State. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Allan Saxe Field.
