March 11, 2011

Final Stats

Sacramento, Calif. - The UT Arlington men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to non-conference opponent Sacramento State Friday afternoon at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club in Sacramento, CA. The loss dropped the Mavericks to 5-5 overall while the Hornets improved to 5-8.

UTA faced a tough Sacramento State team where two singles players and the top doubles team were ranked nationally.

The Mavs were able to record a win in the No. 3 doubles flight but dropped the point after falling in the No.1 and 2 positions.

Nicolas Moreno and David Subirats were the first to finish, winning an 8-3 decision against Josh Lorentzen and Daniel Diaz in the No. 3 spot.

The Mavericks top doubles team of Mindaugas Celedinas and Yauheni Yakauleu dropped a hard-fought 8-3 decision against No. 80 Kiryl Harbatsiuk and Marko Starcevic while Jason Smith and Aliaksandr Malko handed Lucas Leppen and Brieuc Hamon their first loss of the season with a score of 8-4 in the No. 2 spot.

UTA moved onto singles where Yakauleu and Subirats were the only Mavericks to record wins.

Leppen's No. 2 match was the first to be finished as the freshman was forced to retire after suffering a back injury against No. 106 Smith.

Yakauleu gave the Mavericks their first point of the match after winning the No. 3 flight. His opponent Malko was also forced to retire due to an ankle injury during the match.

No. 26 Harbatsiuk handed Celedinas a 6-2, 6-2 setback in the No. 1 spot while Subirats recorded a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the No. 5 position over Lorentzen.

In the No. 6 flight, Moreno came up short, falling 6-2, 6-3 against Javier Millan while the No. 4 flight with Erik Hjertonsson went unfinished because Sacramento State already had won the entire match.

UT Arlington will be back in action against Montana State tomorrow. The match time is yet to be determined.
