Softball crushes Prairie View A&M

Prairie View, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team's bats were on fire Wednesday afternoon as they pounded Prairie View A&M in a double-header. UTA recorded 36 runs in the pair of win and improved its overall record to 18-11.

UT Arlington recorded a 9-1 game one win and followed with a 27-0 victory in game two. The Mavs combined for 35 hits which included nine doubles, one triple and three home runs.

The 27 runs in game two were also the most runs scored by a team coached by Debbie Hedrick.

True freshman Callie Collins (10-3) took the mound in game one, pitching six complete innings and allowed only one run on four hits while striking out nine.

Rebecca Collom, Stephanie Gonzalez and Kallan Thompson each finished with a pair of hits. Collom led the Mavericks going 2-for-2 with a double, home run, two RBI and three runs scored.

UTA opened the first scoring four runs on three hits to take an early 4-0 advantage but the Panthers got on board in the bottom half of the inning plating a run, making it 4-1.

The Mavs added a solo run in the third following a home run from Collom to center field. The homer was Collom's 30th of her career. The first baseman plated another Maverick run in the fourth after she ripped her 10th double of the season to left field scoring Courtney Zink. Zink reach on a base on balls earlier in the inning.

UTA didn't stop there; they plated three more runs in the sixth. Freshman Alexis Cantu accounted for all three runs after she connected on a home run. It was Cantu's fourth homer of the season.

Already with one win under their belt, the Mavericks kept the momentum going in game two. UTA recorded a season-high 25 hits and 27 runs against the Panthers. The Mavericks plated on one or more runs in all but one inning.

Sophomore Teri Lyles (7-7) led the Mavericks on the mound pitching five innings. Lyles held the Panthers scoreless and allowed just three hits while striking out six.

The Mavericks jumped on the Panthers in the first, plating 10 runs on seven hits, to lead 10-0. UTA kept the runs coming scoring three runs in the second, seven runs in the third, six runs in the fourth and a solo run in the fifth for a 27-0 advantage.

UTA had nine player's record multi-hit performances with junior Charne Office leading the way. Office finished the game going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, five RBI and four runs scored.

C. Zink also had a good day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a triple, five RBI and four runs scored.

UTA gets back into conference action Saturday and Sunday when they face Central Arkansas in Conway, AR. Saturday's double-header times are set for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
